3G Football Pitches

3G or Third Generation Football Pitches

3G or Third Generation football pitches, are long pile synthetic surfaces that are filled with sand, rubber or a sand/rubber combination.

The use of rubber granules in the infill of the system is designed to contribute to the shock absorption of the surface. The rubber granules are sometimes mixed with sand.

These synthetic 3G football pitches can be installed over a shock pad, macadam base or directly over a dynamic or unbound compacted stone base. They offer a more natural looking appearance and playing characteristics similar to natural turf than those synthetic systems that have sand-fill only. Players can use a normal boot on this surface.

Sand-dressed Pitches

Several designs of sand-dressed pitches are now available. They offer excellent playing characteristics and are particularly popular for clubs wanting high performance without the cost of a long pile surface.

They have a shorter, denser pile than the standard sand-filled grass systems and have a reduced quantity of sand infill usually to 3/4 of the pile height.

For multisport pitches the sand-dressed system is commonly specified as an alternative to a non-filled irrigated field for Hockey.

Sand Filled Pitches

A sand-filled system is less expensive than non-filled systems. Although the playing characteristics make them suitable for soccer practice only the surfaces are versatile and durable. They can be used for Hockey, Soccer and Tennis in combination with other activities.

The sand is usually taken to within 3mm of the fibre tip.

The pile fibre and sand combine to form the playing surface of the pitch. It is therefore essential that the level of sand is maintained throughout the facility life.

Sand-filled pitches are often the preferred solution for schools and clubs that have a multisport requirement for their sports pitch.
